Plenty happening in Onehunga town centre

It is April in Onehunga, so the mornings are a bit darker and cooler, Easter is coming, and we acknowledge ANZAC Day in our community.

Our town centre will soon host a few new businesses alongside newly opened Slabs Pizza. We will be joined by Good Dog, Bad Dog and Night & Day plus a new chicken restaurant, Chicking, replacing Nandos. Local clothes designer Jojo Ross and stylist Heather Hale are opening at 260 Onehunga Mall and there are other opportunities just around the corner.

These changes have been accompanied by our pop-up gallery, Toi Onehunga. With the support of the Maungakiekie-Tāmaki Local Board we have managed to extend the gallery for another month, and we have updated the collection to introduce two new artists and change over some of the other pieces. The display is great, and I am proud of the team’s work.

If you have not had a chance to visit Toi yet, then it will be open until 1 May (closed Good Friday) at 204 Onehunga Mall. Pop in and see Sabrina or Christina and do not forget to add your hand to our interactive whale tail.

Speaking of whale tails, Our Hands will be on display until mid-April before it joins the rest of the Whale Tales sculptures for a final weekend in the city before going up for auction on 2 May. The Business Association are hoping to purchase the tail for a permanent home in our town centre, but we will keep you updated on this (we have put in a pre-auction offer so fins crossed that is successful).

This month we are celebrating families. In lieu of the cancelled Onehunga Festival, the Maungakiekie-Tāmaki Local Board and the Onehunga Business Association are giving 100 families the chance to play a round of mini golf. Just take your family out for lunch and play a game of golf on the same day. More details are available on page xx of the magazine.
