Look local to take care of yourself and our planet

You would be forgiven for not realising that it is now the middle of winter here in Onehunga. The temperature is still mild, and flowers and fruit appear to be completely confused. I personally prefer different seasons as I do enjoy the occasional frosty morning.

This uncertainty reminds me that we need to need to do our bit for the climate and monitor our actions more closely. It is easy to start at home and work where you can be more accountable for your decisions.

Here at the Business Association, we have now got a Green Gorilla compost bin which can take all forms of compostable material including packaging. We have also applied for a grant from the Waste Minimisation & Innovation fund to support some of our members to run a trial six weeks for compostable collections like ours. We have also hosted a couple of sustainable business workshops and Wilkinson Environmental has undertaken 30 waste audits.

Everyone needs to be more accountable for the waste we all produce. Try your hand at plastic-free July. Hints can include taking in your own reusable plastic containers to get your sushi or a reusable cup for your takeaway coffee.

Although the days are shorter it is still a great time to look after yourself. Onehunga is a host of some fantastic venues for a great haircut, getting a massage or trying out one of the new nail bars that have arrived. Take a walk out in the sunshine or better yet walk to Onehunga town centre and treat yourself!
