One Onehunga: Strategy for success

Onehunga has a thriving town centre. Areas of our neighbourhood are regenerating, and our local community is very active. The future looks bright especially with the opportunity Transform Onehunga, Panuku Development’s programme of work will offer. It is not a matter of why we should develop rather how should we. How many town centres are given the chance to create a master plan on this scale?!

In the growing age of online retail, it is vital for Onehunga to continue to develop an attractive town centre that provides both retail and services for our wider community to enjoy. A new supermarket and better connections to Dress-Smart offer an integrated shopping experience: a one-stop shop for visitors to enjoy.

A dynamic hospitality sector is also essential for prosperity. Onehunga’s families are looking for friendly eateries that cater to all budgets. Alongside The Good Home, Brother’s Beer and Everybody Eats, Onehunga needs to meet the needs and expectations of new residents while maintaining relevance, appeal, inclusion and goodwill towards our existing locals.

Panuku’s development of the Waiapu block (includes Countdown and Gerrard Beeson car park) needs to include friendly public space as well as great links back to Onehunga Mall. There should be plans for appropriate retail development, support for residential and overall a focus on Onehunga as characterful and exciting destination.

Alongside the integrated approach we also need to continue to pressure council and Government to prioritise a variety of public transport, vastly improved pedestrian connections and better cycling facilities.

Our community is already popular, and we need to enhance and develop this to ensure the future of our town centre flourishes.
