In late 2015 Onehunga was selected as one of Panuku Development’s flagship projects to undergo a transformation similar in scale to Wynyard Quarter.
Planning has been underway since that time and the first step was the 2018 purchase of the Onehunga Wharf. This space is to be transformed with retail, homes, cafes and public space. Initially, however, the wharf infrastructure needs to be updated to make it safe. This will take some time and the Onehunga Business Association will keep you updated regarding progress on this project.
In February 2019, the first town centre project launched with the upgrade of the area in front of the Onehunga Police Station and its adjoining laneway. This should be completed by April and will provide some space to use recreationally and also open up the laneway so it is no longer used as a driveway.
Consultation: Panuku Development has launched a tool called Social Pinpoint which they are currently focusing on some of the laneways off Onehunga Mall. If you have stories to tell or want developers to understand what is important to you in Onehunga then this is an easy tool to use. There are seven laneways in Onehunga and they are starting with three: Laneway 4 (152 Onehunga Mall), Laneway 7 (5 Pearce Street, next door to the Police Station) and Laneway 8 (Paynes Lane). Think art, sound and light for inspiration.
