OBA offers organic compost trial to members

In an effort to further develop Onehunga's commitment to a more sustainable circular economy, the Onehunga Business Association (OBA) has launched a new trial of organic waste collection by Green Gorilla in an effort to reduce our organic waste to landfill.

Supported by Auckland Council's Waste Minimisation Programme, the six collection trial will be with Onehunga's Green Gorilla who collect the waste as suits the business and add it the truck load that they take to their yard in the Bombay area. This is combined with the collection of green waste, cooked at high temperatures and eventually turned into quality compost that is returned to farms in the area.

The OBA has been working with Wilkinson Environmental, Auckland Unlimited, Eke Panuku and the Maungakiekie-Tamaki Local Board to undertake waste audits and identify how we could help reduce waste to landfill. One of the easy wins was to help business with their organic waste.

OBA Town Manager Amanda Wellgreen saw the opportunity with the Waste Minimisation Programme as a first solution to change behaviour.

"Business face a lot of costs that they can find overwhelming. I'm sure that most of them are interested in supporting a more sustainable approach but don't know where to start," says Amanda. "So the OBA is taking this hurdle away from them by organising everything with Green Gorilla. They can see how easy it is to use a organic waste bin and it may help them with decisions about packaging and reducing their rubbish to landfill. My goal is that most businesses then continue on once the free trial concludes after six collections."
