Onehunga expansion successful!

It’s official. The recent ballot for the expansion of the Onehunga business improvement district (BID) closed today. With 29.7% return, over 70% of respondents were in favour of enlarging the BID to include the whole business community of Onehunga.

This is a great result and provides the business association with the mandate to enlarge their representation to over 1,100 organisations between Captain Springs Road, Trafalgar Street, Beachcroft Ave to the Onehunga Port.

Onehunga Business Association Manager Amanda Wellgreen, was really proud of the team effort made to achieve this result.

“Since 2020, we have been out hitting the streets meeting business owners, listening to what’s important to them and gathering a comprehensive database of our business community.

To receive over 70% support for our kaupapa is a great achievement and we are really excited about the future. My goal is to support people to enhance both Onehunga itself but also make our business community stronger, together. This will start with a CCTV plan, improved security measures and better connections between neighbours” said Amanda.

The next step in this expansion process is to take a report to the Maungakiekie-Tāmaki Local Board and get their mandate to take this enlargement to Auckland Council for inclusion in the 2024/25 budget.

Work will then begin in earnest from 1 July 2024.
